JAMP is a non-partisan, non-government and not-for-profit company dedicating itself to improving public financial governance in Jamaica.
Public finance. Budget cycles. Compliance frameworks. Let’s face it. These are not trendy topics. But our job was to make them watchable and engaging. It’s a dense terrain, loaded with nuance and lots of facts to unpack. Much of this was new to us, so our first job was just to understand.
We explored the material, the target audience, and the context so we could explain it to someone who has never heard of it. Someone like us, just before the project began.
Unpacking the material into a cogent script sometimes takes rounds of feedback and a bit of time to lock it in, and we say so at the start.
Our first video on the Constituency Development Fund helped give an imposing topic an approachable makeover. But the real work sat underneath the animation.
JAMP has a wealth of information and a mission that touches every level of society. The challenge for every video since then has been condensing them to be short enough to hold attention and clear enough to move people. We worked with them on the storytelling itself. Refining the message. Asking tough questions, even when there was pushback. Sitting in the shoes of the listener before writing the script.
The process became part of the partnership. The outcome we’re proudest of is that JAMP has since evolved in how they tell their story, not only on screen but in person, in workshops, and in the way they now frame their own thinking.
The work has travelled. It's broadcast on television before every parliament sitting and screened at workshops across the country.
Jamaicans on TikTok are using JAMP's theory of change in their own words. Creators are being applauded for making accountability feel relatable, even interactive. What began as one explainer has become part of how the country talks about civic responsibility.
Five years in, the conversation is louder. And their mission is more important now than ever before.
